Therapy for Adults with ADHD

Many adults with ADHD describe feeling as though their attention is pulled in multiple directions at once. Difficulties with focus, organisation, time management, or emotional regulation can make everyday demands feel more effortful.

Although awareness of ADHD has increased in recent years, many people continue to experience frustration related to missed deadlines, impulsive decisions, or difficulty maintaining attention during conversations or tasks that matter to them. These experiences can contribute to feelings of overwhelm, self-criticism, or being misunderstood.

Adults with ADHD often report starting the day with clear intentions but finding that distractions, competing priorities, or fluctuating motivation make it difficult to follow through as planned. Over time, repeated challenges with organisation, planning, or task completion may affect confidence and energy levels.

Decision-making can also feel challenging when multiple options compete for attention, sometimes leading to avoidance or mental fatigue. ADHD may influence work, relationships, routines, and self-perception in different ways for different individuals.

ADHD reflects differences in attention regulation and executive functioning rather than a lack of effort or ability. Developing a clearer understanding of how your brain works can support more effective ways of responding to daily demands.

Therapy may provide a space to explore the impact of ADHD, develop practical strategies, and build greater self-understanding. Sessions are collaborative and tailored to individual goals and circumstances.

If you are considering support for ADHD-related challenges, you are welcome to make an enquiry.

Can Tender Studio Prescribe ADHD Medication?

No. In Australia, ADHD medication can only be prescribed by psychiatrists, paediatricians (for children), and some general practitioners.

Psychologists do not prescribe medication. However, psychological therapy may support individuals in understanding and managing ADHD-related challenges through cognitive, behavioural, and emotional strategies.

Psychological support may involve developing practical organisational and planning strategies, exploring attention and focus difficulties, and building emotional regulation and coping skills. Therapy may also include addressing the social and emotional impacts of ADHD and supporting overall wellbeing where ADHD overlaps with stress, mood, or anxiety-related concerns.

Where appropriate, collaboration with a client’s GP, psychiatrist, or other treating professionals can occur to support coordinated care.

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

Some adults who seek therapy for ADHD-related challenges describe experiences such as:

  • I find it difficult to relax and stay present.

  • My brain feels constantly busy.

  • I know what I need to do, but struggle to get started.

  • I worry that I'm unreliable.

  • I either hyperfocus and lose track of time or struggle to focus at all - there’s no in-between.

  • I miss deadlines, even when things matter to me.

  • I feel like I’m letting down the people that I care about.

  • Everyday tasks feel unexpectedly overwhelming.

  • My emotions feel intense or hard to regulate.

  • It’s hard to stay on top of everything.

  • I interrupt or speak impulsively without intending to.

  • Trying to keep everything together feels exhausting.

  • I feel capable of more but struggle to follow through.

LIVE IN ALIGNMENT WITH YOUR STRENGTHS AND VALUES

Supporting Adults with ADHD

Many adults with ADHD seek therapy when they would like daily life to feel more manageable and better aligned with their priorities and values.

Therapy may involve developing a clearer understanding of how ADHD influences attention, motivation, emotions, and relationships. Together, we may explore practical strategies for organising tasks, setting realistic goals, and responding to challenges in ways that feel more sustainable.

Some people find therapy provides space to reconsider long-held self-beliefs shaped by years of frustration or misunderstanding. Sessions can focus on building self-awareness, developing supportive routines, and approaching difficulties with greater self-compassion.

Rather than trying to force change through willpower alone, therapy aims to support individuals in understanding how their brain works and identifying approaches that fit their unique strengths, energy patterns, and circumstances.

Outcomes vary from person to person; however, many individuals report increased insight into their ADHD and greater confidence in navigating everyday demands over time.

HOW WE CAN HELP

What Therapy Looks Like

Tender Studio psychologists provide evidence-based psychological support for adults experiencing ADHD-related challenges, available both in person and via telehealth.

Therapy for adults with ADHD often includes attention to practical skills alongside emotional support. Sessions may focus on understanding how ADHD affects daily functioning while developing strategies that are tailored to individual needs and goals.

Areas commonly explored in therapy include:

  • Time management and procrastination patterns

  • Organisation and planning strategies

  • Emotional regulation skills

  • Managing impulsive responses

  • Exploring self-criticism and self-esteem concerns

  • Communication and relationship dynamics

  • Workplace or study-related challenges

  • Co-occurring concerns such as anxiety or low mood

  • Sleep routines and daily structure

  • Motivation and goal-setting approaches

  • Stress management and coping strategies

Our psychologists draw on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying patterns of thinking and behaviour and developing practical strategies that may support attention, organisation, and emotional coping.

Schema Therapy explores longer-standing emotional and relational patterns that may influence how individuals respond to challenges and relate to themselves and others.

Therapy is collaborative and adapted to each person’s circumstances. The aim is to support greater understanding of ADHD and to explore strategies that may assist with navigating work, relationships, and everyday responsibilities.
